31st August 2005 Wednesday
The morning of departure was finally here. Trista and I were going to drive to Calgary today.

Instead of carrying all the camera gears and laptop, I only brought my new Canon SD500 and the Epson P-2000 to store photo along the trip. We took off around 10am from Vancouver. Three hours later, we found ourselves driving Trista's Volvo S70 with a pack of Red Bull in the Rockie Mountain.

The fantastic scenery made the 1000 KM journey way easier than we thought.

It took us 10 hours on the road. And I couldn't deny that S70 is a really good car. We drove around 140Km/Hr, almost nonstop to Calgary. It's soooooooooo fun.

Dinner time, we stopped at Banff, relaxing in the outdoor hotspring while watching the sunset over the bow valley.

It's the last day of August. It's an unforgettable day!

24th August 2005 Wednesday
Monday night, Trista and I went to the Commodore Ballroom to watch Dinosaur Jr. They are one of my favorite Rock bands. Although I've been listened to their cd for years, I have no idea what they look like and how they perform.

The show was fantastic. I gotta thank Trista. Rock music to her is too noisy but I am glad that she could still go with me and let me enjoy the performance.

Every tuesday in August is Ubyssey's production night. We decided to make a 12 pages first year special issue for this week. A 12-page issue means a long production night with nonstop hardworking.

Simon, the culture editor wanted to put a UBC 3D map with cute animals represent different faculties and buildings. So we spent lot of time to make the map.

Jesse, Claudia, Simon, Greg and Liz were working on the map.

It took me so long to photography it properly.

Everyone worked so hard.

Liz was editing some article.

2:30am, we finally finished everything and sent the digital copy to the priting company. It's a fun production night but exhaustic.

21st August 2005 Sunday
I've been so busy lately. No utill today, I didn't have a minute to sit down updating my website. Lot of things happened. Trista went back from China. And now, she is struggling with the jet leg and home sick.

Stephen, Trista's high school friend, came visiting Vancouver and we had a dinner together in downtown.

Like usual, Ubyssey published its new issue this Wednesday. I didn't have too many photos in the paper. Instead, my working was emphasized on the image editing for other editors.

Last night, Trista and I went to watch a musical show at Presentation House in North Vancouver. It's called "Sweet Charity". One of my friend from Ubyssey, Liz Green, played a small role in the show. She was working as the costume designer as well. It's a wonderful play. Trista and I enjoyed it alot.

I took the 24-70 F2.8 and 70-200 F2.8 IS lenses with me. Photos turned out to be so great. God, I love my lenses!!!

Finally, Canon China posted the winner photo in its website for the photo contest I attened. It's interesting to see how the judge criticized my photo.

Two weeks ago, Eric told me that Virgin would be closed. I thought it's a jok and didn't pay attention at all. However, when I walked into the cd store this morning, I was totally shocked ......

Although I didn't buy CD from Virgin too often, the cd store is indeed one of my favorite place in Vancouver. Whenever I went to downtown area, I could walk into the store, checking out the new albums.

I have no idea why Virgin gonna be closed. I have no idea what kind of business will be placed into this famous location. The only thing that I know is I will miss the store alot.

11th August 2005 Thursday
After two weeks of waiting, I finally got the last lens that I ordered from Canon, the 24-70 F2.8L lens. I drove to the UBC beach, trying to use the lens shooting some sunset view. But it's too late when I got there. Anyway, I photographied a couple who was watching the sunset. It's so sweet to watch other couple doing things together.

An interesting photo that I found couple of days ago. It looks cool.

10th August 2005 Wednesday
Last night was the production night. Everything went smoothly. Like usual, I updated my Ubyssey News Photo session with the latest photos.

Talking about the production night, I felt better and more relax than the first time. Working with these talented editors were really fun. I was very glad that the Ubyseey office room could always be filled with music and laugh. We cheered when we sent out the final digital file to the printing company.

Basil was proof reading the sample print.

Tuesday and Wednesday are like a long long long day to me. There were only 4 hours sleeping in between. I am glad that I've done the paper distribution on time. Now, I could lean on my chair, relax a bit.

Something funny today, on the way to UBC, I saw lot of dogs in the car. I photographied some of them. They are cute, aren't they? I wonder when can I get a big dog, watching he/her growing up like a baby. :)

Woow, a dog family! Dad is driving. Mom and son were sitting at the back. Seatbelt!!! Where are the seatbelts??

Photos were taken by my 70-200 IS lens, supreme optial quality.

6th August 2005 Saturday
12:07AM, I went back home from Spanish Banks. Joannes and I were out there shooting firework photo. We carried lot of camera equipments. And finally, I would have a chance to test my new 70-200 F2.8 IS lens and my new Manfrotto 055 PROB tripod with 410 Gear Head.

Joannes and I were stannding beside our cameras.

One of the best shots I made tonight.

The 410 gear head is so easy to use and it's a wonderful equipment. I should get this baby earlier. :( Shooting firework was not an easy job. There were too many factors that you need to consider about. The image above should be the best one I've ever took. I wish next year I could make some other good shots and Trista could be here with me to watch the fireworks.

3rd August 2005 Wednesday
Lot of things happened. I've been busy all the way down.

August 2nd, 2005, was my first day ever working as photo editor for Ubyssey News Paper. I attened the editors meeting in the noon and got all the notes about my work. For the first summer issue, I need couple of photos for news, culture and sports sections.

Eric, the news editor, decided to use a nude photo from wrech beach at the front cover. And I had to force myself walking down the beach and asking people "do you mind if I take some photo while you are naked. and the photo will be published on the front cover of Ubyssey news paper tomorrow". Most people think I was creazy but two girls. After checking my ID and student card, they gave me a green light. I really appreciated them. The photo was good on the paper. Both news editor and the production manager love it.

I made a new link in the index page to display photos that I took for the news paper. I will keep update it for each issue.

The production night was running from 12 at noon yesterday till 1am this morning. It's so interesting. I made lot of friends and learned lot of stuff that I could never have chance to learn before. The paper production was cool and complicated. The work was pretty intense. People worked late without a break. But we had lot of fun. Music, cold joks and Mac work station were all around the office.

from left: Eric, Michelle, Basil and Alex were working on the paper design

I was working on my laptop, since my work station was not there yet.

After 4 hours sleep, I got up to do the paper distribution. I picked up the papers from the printing company in the early morning. Watching the "fresh" paper was like watching a new born baby. It's my first issue. I am proud of myself.

Not untill today that I realized UBC is such a huge university. It took me almost 6 hours none stop to put 8000 copies of Ubyssey into different buildings. I went home around 5pm and slept till 5 mins ago.

I am looking forward for the next paper production.

1st August 2005 Monday
Tomorrow gonna be my first day working as photo editor for Ubyssey News Paper. The production night is from 12 oclock in the noon till 12 oclock in the evening. I am kind of excited about the new job. :)

Asking by culture editor, I went to English bay last saturday to photography the firework. Photos turned out to be ok. They are not as good as I expected. However, I was amazed by the amount of people. After the firework, I photographied the following image. I couldn't believe that Vancouver has such lot of people.

One of the biggest news to my life lately is that I spent huge amount of money (around 7K) purchasing 3 top line Canon Lens, 16-35mm F2.8, 24-70mm F2.8, 70-200 IS F2.8. They are Fast and accurate. I still can't believe that I actually own these lenses now. It's like a dream comes true.

I took some testing photo for one of the lenses and was truely surprised by the result.

Without any photoshop post editing, the images are still sharp and colorful.

Although these lenses cost me a fortune, I am happy with my decision. They worth every penny I paied.
